The Olympics were contested regularly for 1,170 years, until they came to an end by the Roman Emperor (Litsky 1). The Olympics were reinstated in 1894 and were supposed to be reminders to people to encourage world peace. In modern times, the Olympics are held every four years in a different country chosen by the International Olympic Committee. The Olympics are open to athletes who are able to compete in certain events (Tatlow 4). In the Olympics the top three finishers in an event get awards: a gold medal for first place, a silver medal for second place and a bronze medal for third place. The Modern Olympics are interesting because they now include winter sports and because speed skating, one of the more exciting events to watch, was added to the Games. After the Olympics stopped during Roman times, many people still had the Olympic spirit. Finally, in the late 19th century, Baron Pierre de Coubertin of France started up the Olympics again, and they are now known as the Modern Olympics (Litsky 1). He believed the Olympics would help the nations come together to compete in a friendly contest, and would be less likely go to war against each other. The first ever Modern Olympics were held in 1894 in Athens, Greece. Thirteen nations competed in the Modern Olympics, and only men were allowed to compete (Tatlow 25). These Athens Olympics games did not include any winter sports. The games were held in the Panathenean Stadium, which was built in 330 B.C. and was rebuilt for the Modern Olympics (Tatlow 9). Then, in 1900, women were allowed to compete in the events. Also, in 1908 figure skating was added, and in 1920 ice hockey was included. Both these were in the Summer Olympics. Another change came in 1924 in Chamonix, France, when a national Winter Olympic week was added to the Summer Olympics. This started the Winter Olympics. From then on the Olympics were split into two sections, Summer and Winter (Fradin 22-23). The first Winter Olympics included skiing, bobsledding, figure skating, ice hockey, ski jumping, speed skating, and tobogganing. Today more events, such as snowboarding, are included. We are fortunate today that the Olympics were brought back, and we are also fortunate that in addition to the Summer Olympics, the Winter Games were started. Among all the sports in the Winter Olympic speed skating is one of the most exciting. Speed skating has been part of the Winter Olympics since 1924. Later in 1960 women were able to race in speed skating. There are two types of speed skating events: short track speed skating, and long track speed skating. Short track is called the demolition derby of the Olympics (U.S. Speedskating). The short track is about the size of a hockey rink, and short track was added to the Winter Olympic Games in 1992 and it is becoming more popular. The athletes speed around the track trying to get in first place and the most common disqualification in this type of racing is falling. Long track is what most people are familiar with. Speed skaters compete in separate lanes against the clock. The United States speed skating team practices in many places, including at the Pettit Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and in Marquette, Michigan. (U.S. Speedskating). China, Korea, Canada, Japan, and the United States are the favorites when it comes to speed skating in the Winter Olympics. Canada currently holds the speed skating gold medal (Barker). Skaters that might have a chance to do well are U.S. speed skating teammates Brian Hansen, Trevor Marsicano, Jonathan Kuck, Shani Davis and Jilleane Rookard. These competitive athletes train year round. The women’s speed skating team has a seventy five percent of winning the 3000 meter relay (Berg). Speed skating, both short and long track, are great additions to the Winter Olympics. They are both very fast and very competitive. In conclusion, the Olympics are very exciting for many reasons, and two reasons are because the Olympics consist of the Winter Olympics and because speed skating is a very intense sport to watch. The Summer Olympics will be held in London in 2012 and the Winter Olympics are in Sochi, Russia in 2014. Be sure to watch them and cheer on the USA Olympic team. The Games are not that far away!
